Hollywood flops or bombs of 2022

 

It is that time of the year again when people are all waiting for interesting things like Hollywood superhit movies and making them enjoyable. But as each day begins with hope, this January is filled with disappointment. The list of films that failed in their theatrical release was so long and varied. You’re still reading this, congratulations on sticking around. Many movies did not perform well, or at all, which had a bad start but then have been saved up for their streaming premiere. So let us look back at some recent movies to see how they were received by critics and audiences alike.

Hustlers (2022)

Hustlers have opened in theaters but didn’t do so very well because they received low scores from both critics and audiences. We have seen reviews such as ‘breathtakingly awful’ and ‘dumb, dumber’, as well as negative reviews like ‘not worth your money’ on several websites. Some film critics were even critical enough to say that the movie should have never been made, and many others felt that it was indeed mediocre, not good enough, for an Oscar contender.

To add insult to injury, there was also a huge amount of misinformation available for those who wanted to do something different to take place in our world, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The story follows two young women struggling to find work during the height of the summer heatwave but being met with obstacles while trying to overcome them.

Boyz n the Hood (2022)

Boyz n the Hood is a black comedy that has gone through multiple iterations over the past 10 years. Originally written and directed in 2003 with Will Smith playing the titular role, Boyz n the Hood was once regarded as a cult favorite among fans but then failed to gain widespread acclaim.

 Critics and audiences who watched the movie were not too impressed either as it received positive reviews from critics such as “expectations high” but that same article states that it did receive a “C-minus on A-list critics”. Nonetheless, the original version received mixed reviews and was considered not quite successful by most viewers.

The current movie follows a group of African American boys growing up as gangsters in Los Angeles after going down a road of drug dealing and violence in Hollywood superhit movies.

They live in poverty in foster homes until one member of the gang gets sent to prison for his crime and starts forging deals. The rest of the gang decides to band together to try and fix things, and it is revealed that the person behind most of the crimes was a friend of the previous group.

 Although the dialogue was incredibly simple and did not contain any witty lines throughout, the overall storyline seemed complex, making the story feel more multi-dimensional and intriguing. Unfortunately for you, here in 2022, you cannot watch this movie without seeing it dubbed. Also, the movie would be more appealing if it wasn’t filmed in English.

 

Rampersad (2022)

Rampersad was a 2018 Malayalam adaptation of the Hinglish thriller Snowpiercer starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Bullock and originally written and directed by Kannan Rajendran under Yorgos Lanthimathi Productions. Produced by Anirudh Chopra and produced under Sohail Sharma’s banner BOSS Films, Rampersad received mixed reviews from critics, reviewers, and general audiences however; it still managed to garner $110 million in global box office receipts in 2015.

The movie features Ranveer, who plays Jack Butcher, who happens to be the son of Vijay Sethupathi playing Devaki, played by Dileep Kumar.

Together, they play protagonists in a murder mystery drama titled Ramayanamma directed by Samyukta Menon. Both actors share the screen time and it will lead to interesting dynamics between them unfolding. However, the biggest problem with the plot is that the script itself seems weak on certain levels.

Despite not being able to escape from jail after killing someone he loves in real life, Jack still has no reason to regret it, and hence he chooses to commit suicide instead. Another issue with the screenplay is the fact that it attempts to solve every puzzle independently. Because Vikram, whom the audience is first introduced to, is supposed to be the killer, he fails to stop and kills Ramayanamma. It may cause Hollywood to flop movies due to weakness in the outcomes. 

 

The Gray Man (2022)

The Gray Man is director Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to 2017’s The Dark Knight, though this time, Batman goes up against Neo. He is forced to choose between saving Gotham City from criminals aided by James Gordon aka Bane or helping Amanda Todd, Robin’s mother, who is kidnapped by Joker as part of a plan to expose him to the world. Luckily, Batman comes across the Red Hood Killer, otherwise known as Harvey Dent, who intends to destroy Batman by showing Hollywood flop movies.

Unlike last time when Batman simply went to help save the innocent and tried his hardest to help her fight off enemies, this time, Batman must choose between his peace and a mission he believes in. That means he risks dying and sacrificing his happiness to bring justice to the criminal community of Gotham City. Ultimately, it turns out that a whole lot of heroes died trying to stand by the man whose name he knew and swore to protect, leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.
